Alvina Beattie was names for her two grandmothers, Barbara Ann Winslow and Alwine Otte. By tradition she was called by her middle name with a long “I” sound, of which, she was quite insistent. Born May 26, 1934, to Jurgen G. Otte and Sarah Alberta Winslow, she was raised in Longview, Wash.
In 1952 she graduated from R.A. Long High School and a few weeks later married Donald M. Beattie at Stella Lutheran Chapel. She made note they were the third couple married in the recently completed building of which her family helped build. She has fond memories of Stella and the community growing up, playing the organ for church and tending to the children.
She and Don made their first home in Kelso, but later moved to San Leandro, Calif., then Portland, Ore., Seattle, Wash., and eventually spent the last 60 years back in the Longview area. She was involved in the American Business Women’s Association, Soroptimist International, Daughters of the Nile, and Eastern Star. She was a life member of the Washington State Grange.
Alvina assisted her husband in his real estate and tax business. Don preceded her in death in 2008. Alvina died Jan. 26, 2024.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda Beattie Inlow of Longview; a son and daughter-in-law, Clifford and Tracy Beattie of Kelso; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be announced at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Stella Lutheran Church, 124 Sherman Rd, Longview, WA 98632 or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Rd, Portland, OR 97239.
