Charles Hugh McGreevy

November 12, 1949 — February 23, 2025

Longview, WA

Charles Hugh McGreevy, affectionately known as Chuck, passed away on Sunday afternoon, February 23, 2025, in his hometown of Longview, Washington. Born on November 12, 1949, Charles lit up a room and the hearts of those around him with his infectious smile and hearty laughter. He was surrounded by the love and support of his brother Joe McGreevy, sister-in-law Wilma McGreevy, nephew Kevin McGreevy and his wife Tia, and niece Monica Tweet as he made his transition into eternal life. His care team at the Frontier compassionately and skillfully attended to his needs during this time.

A kind soul, Charles had a fun personality and a witty sense of humor that could brighten the dullest of days. His love for family was evident as he consistently reached out to his nieces and nephews, always eager to know how they were doing. Holiday cards signed “Charles McGreevy” were a cherished tradition, and he delighted in gifting the kids with candy or a few dollars on their birthdays. Charles took pride in his collection of frogs, each with its own story of how it came to be part of his extensive assortment, and he had a special fondness for classic movies, westerns, and sci-fi. His gift for remembering trivia related to films, including the names of characters and actors, brought joy to many conversations.

Charles enjoyed activities such as playing Bingo, visiting with family and friends, and attending Seattle Mariners baseball games. He even embraced a little bit of gambling, relishing the opportunity to "beat the house." His adventurous spirit led him to travel throughout Kentucky, Oregon, and Washington to spend time with loved ones. After having heart surgery, he shared a memorable trip with his brother Joe to Las Vegas, where he reveled in the magic of the city along with a breathtaking live Cirque du Soleil show.

Charles attended the Rainer State School in Buckley, Washington. Upon returning to Longview, he lived independently in his 17th Avenue apartment. Charles lived genuinely, honestly, and humbly, he never complained. His resilience was an inspiration to all who knew him. Striking a balance between humor and humility, Uncle Chuck always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye whenever he saw his family. He would often remind everyone to "Stay Outta Trouble," a testament to his jovial, caring nature.

In addition to his family, he leaves behind myriad memories of joy and laughter for all who crossed paths with him. Charles was proud of being part of an inclusive, loving family, which he considered his greatest asset. Many will remember the little practical jokes he played, adding fun and laughter to everyday life.

Charles is survived by his brother Cornelius Joseph "Joe" McGreevy Jr. and his wife Wilma H. McGreevy; sister Mary Neil Zerkel and Bill Zerkel; niece Monica Tweet and husband Kerry; nephew Kevin McGreevy and wife Tia; niece Tara Johnson and husband Ryan; niece Brenda Nicol and husband Drew; niece Carla Olson and husband Kevin. He was also blessed with great nieces and nephews: Zachary and Anij Tweet, Korbyn McGreevy, Riley and Rory Johnson, Taylor and Cody Olson. He is further survived by his cousins: Mary Teresa McLaughlin and her daughter Maria, Frank and Billie Donahue, Bruce and Shasta McLean, Peggy and David Heitkemper, Fran and Vernon Meyer, and Ruth Crowell.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius Joseph "Neil" McGreevy and Lula Laura "Lu" McGreevy, as well as his sisters Bettye Jean Miller and Frances Lee "Francie" Thompson. He was also preceded by several aunts and uncles, including William "Bud" McGreevy, Ellen Schakohl, Gordon McGreevy, James McGreevy, Genevieve Evelyn "Jennie" McLean, Margaret Mary Donahue, and Frances C. Donahue.

Heartfelt gratitude goes out to all who have known and cared for Charles McGreevy. May his memory continue to bring light into the lives of those who loved him.
