Chester David Wornick, born on January 10, 1943, in Norman, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at home on August 12, 2024, in Longview, Washington. Chet, as he was affectionately known, lived a life rich in love, commitment, and service, touching the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A devoted and loving husband to his wife, Avis, Chet proudly cherished their life together since they married in 1962. He was a dedicated father, nurturing the lives of his children, Cindy and Jay (Denelle), and a doting grandfather to his grandchildren Kaitlyn, Chesalea, Leevigh, Jaushua, NaKayla, Joseph, Jayden, Chanelle, and great-granddaughter Aubree. All brought him immense joy, and he treasured every moment spent with his family.
Chet's career began after graduation from Mark Morris High School in 1961, leading him through various roles and experiences. He worked for Reynolds Metals Aluminum for over five years and briefly for Bechtel. His journey took a significant turn when he was accepted into the Electrical Apprenticeship Program. This opportunity led him into the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union, Local 970, now Local 48, where he embarked on a fulfilling electrical career that spanned over 55 years. Chet spent 25 grateful years working with the Nelson Family at Nelson Electric Service. Together he and his wife purchased the business, where they enjoyed a successful partnership until their retirement in 2008.
Beyond his professional life, Chet was an individual who thrived on connection and community.
Known as a people person, he cherished building relationships with everyone at Nelson Electric.
His openness and honesty created a welcoming environment, making him a respected instructor for the electrical apprenticeship program and a valued member of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). For 15 Years, he served on the Longview apprenticeship committee, dedicating his time and experience to helping others succeed.
Chet's passions extended into his personal life, where he loved hobbies such as carpentry work, fishing in the Columbia River, taking trips to Alaskan rivers, and riding his motorcycles. He was passionate about reading and listening to all types of music. He cherished the time spent in his garden and particularly enjoyed relaxing in the covered swing he built himself. In his later years he valued attending bible study with his aunt Tina and fellowship. His adventurous spirit also led him on a memorable Canada/Alaska Sky Princess Cruise and enjoyable trips to Hawaii, moments that he enthusiastically shared with his wife Avis, close friends and family.
Chet is predeceased by his father, Chester L. Wornick; mother, Ena M. Mathis; sister, Judy; stepfather, A.T. Mathis; grandson, Jaushua; honorary brother, Jim P.; sister-in-law, Rita; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. His warmth and kindness will be missed dearly by all.
A memorial service to honor Chet's wonderful life will be held on October 26, 2024, at Steele Chapel in Longview, Washington at 1:30. Family and friends will gather to honor and remember the man whose legacy of love and dedication will forever remain in their hearts.
