Dale George Gibbons, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on December 5, 2024, in Vancouver, Washington, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 2, 1933, in Muldrow, Oklahoma, and from his earliest days, he embodied a spirit of resilience and determination.
Dale's life journey was a poignant testament to the American Dream, a story he recounted with unwavering pride. Growing up in rural Oklahoma, he faced challenges that only fueled his ambition. He graduated from Santa Maria High School in Santa Maria, CA in 1951, and shortly thereafter, he answered the call of duty during the Korean War. As a medic and firefighter, Dale served from 1951 to 1955, rising to the rank of Corporal. He would often reflect on his service by expressing how he saved more lives than he took, and his bravery was recognized with the Purple Heart medal.
A voracious reader and lifelong learner, Dale nurtured an insatiable curiosity about the world around him. He delved into ancient history, natural sciences, and the intricate tapestry of U.S. politics, always eager to share what he learned. His personality shone through in every interaction, where detail and precision defined not only his career as a crane operator for Reynolds Metals, Co. but also his love for marksmanship and hunting. Dale’s accolades included numerous awards for his record book trophies, and his passion for firearms culminated in a successful gun dealership lasting several decades.
The memories created with Dale abound—family dinners filled with laughter, exciting holidays, thrilling hunting trips, and travels that transported him across borders. He treasured each moment, often reminiscing about his childhood while instilling a love for nature and adventure in those around him. Those who joined him for a cup of coffee were mesmerized by the captivating tales of his adventures, whether they involved political discourse or recounting experiences from his travels to Africa.
Dale’s pride in his family, particularly in his heritage, was profound. He cherished his family's Native American roots and shared this legacy with open heartedness. He was the proud husband of Linda Gibbons, devoted father to Elaine VanMil, and a doting grandfather to Alicia Jackson and Ryan Jackson. Additionally, he delighted in being a great-grandfather to Brooklyn and Brandon, each bringing immense joy to his life.
While Dale admired his gun collection and his extensive African game trophies, those close to him understood that his greatest accomplishments lay within his unwavering devotion to his family and his selfless service as a veteran. He was a caring provider, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Dale is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Linda Gibbons; daughter, Elaine VanMil (Tom); brother, Doyle Gibbons; grandchildren, Alicia Jackson (Ryan) and Ryan Jackson (Charlotte); as well as great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Brandon.
