Our beloved Jim passed away at home at the age of 95. He was born in Mt. Vernon, Washington on March 31, 1929 to Rev. Clarence J. and Elsie M. (Hoskin) Goodman and older sister Arlene. They settled in Longview in 1940.
Jim attended local schools and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1946 through 1949, where he served in the Submarine Service. Upon his discharge he returned to Longview and joined the Longview Police Department where he sustained a near fatal gunshot injury while on duty.
He later went to work for Weyerhaeuser Company with positions in both Oregon and Washington. While in Eugene, he was honored to be named "Boss of the Year". He returned to Longview as Personnel Manager and retired after 40 dedicated years.
In 1950, Jim met and married the love of his life, Darlene Michels. They celebrated 74 years of marriage on October 10. Jim was devoted to his wife Darlene, three children; Theresa (Steve), twins, Randy and Rick (Becky), five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. He also has a half sister, Jeannie Kinnonen.
Jim was an avid golfer and traveler and loved to spend time at their condo at Eagle Crest in Oregon for 30 years. Jim was involved in many professional and fraternal organizations. His pride and passion was the local Healthcare Foundation. He was a founder, officer, and board member for 40 years.
There will not be a service at this time. His wish was to go back to sea where "Submariners never die, they are on eternal patrol". He will be warmly remembered and greatly missed by all who knew him. He was just the best! A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In leiu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul or your charity of choice.
