Jesse Alan Johnston

January 30, 1946 — January 28, 2025

Longview, Washington

Jesse Alan Johnston, fondly known as Jess, passed away on January 28, 2025, in Longview, Washington, after a brave and extended battle with kidney failure. He was born on January 30, 1946, in Nyssa, Oregon, to James C. Johnston and Iila Mae Johnston Erdman (Smith), who, along with his daughter Jennifer Lynn Johnston, precede him in death.

Jess was a man of quiet strength, living a life filled with meaningful experiences. He graduated from Kelso High School in 1964, paving the way for a multifaceted journey that would take him to various corners of the United States and beyond. After high school, Jess served in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972, an aircraft mechanic during the tumultuous times of the Vietnam War. His dedication to service continued when he joined the Navy from 1976 to 1979, working diligently on flight simulators.

Over the years, Jess cultivated a versatile career, showcasing his skills as a welder at Weyerhaeuser in Longview and a slot machine technician in Nevada, before settling into his role as a biomedical technician at multiple hospitals, concluding his career at the University of Washington Hospital in Seattle, from which he retired in 2007. His passion for welding led him to author a book titled “The Arc and Beyond - Welding Simplified,” a testament to his knowledge and dedication to his craft.

Jess had a heart for adventure and exploration, often finding joy in the serene embrace of nature. He was an avid hunter, despite not always being successful in his pursuits, embracing the tranquility of trudging through woods in search of deer and trying his hand at bow hunting. His love for the great outdoors was matched only by his affection for the ocean, where he found peace. He cherished fond memories in the Cook Islands, where he served as a Mormon Missionary and later returned to work at a hospital, leaving a piece of his heart there.

Despite his quieter demeanor, Jess had a playful side. His indoor hobbies included watching sports on television and immersing himself in Xbox games, bringing a spark of joy and connection. He found fulfillment in the time spent with his grandsons, Corbin and Marcus Kingston of Everett, Washington, who brought immense brightness to his life.

Jess's life was a rich tapestry woven through service, career, and cherished memories. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Jennifer Marie Johnston, and his brother, James Johnston (Dayne) of Kelso, Washington. The profound impact he made on those who knew him will be forever held in their hearts.

As family and friends gather to celebrate Jess’s life, a graveside service will be held on Friday, February 14, 2025, 11:00 am, at Longview Memorial Park, providing a chance to remember a man whose quiet strength and spirit will live on in the memories of all who loved him.
