JoAnn Marie Poirier

February 25, 1935 — September 27, 2024

JoAnn Marie Poirier, affectionately known as "Sam," was a beloved figure cherished by her family and friends. She was born on February 25, 1935, in Yakima, Washington, and passed away peacefully of natural causes on September 27, 2024, in Port Orchard, Washington.

JoAnn's life was a testament to her unwavering love for her family and her passion for helping others. She graduated from high school in Yakima and went on to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, serving as an assistant at the Cowlitz Veterinary Clinic in Longview, Washington, for many years. Her compassion extended to all animals, and her dedication to their care was a reflection of her nurturing spirit.

In addition to her professional achievements, JoAnn was a talented seamstress whose creativity knew no bounds. Her remarkable skill allowed her to sew beautiful clothing for her family, including nine stunning prom gowns for her daughter. From covering sofas with precision to creating thousands of doll clothes, her contributions were felt in every stitch. She also crafted leather vests and jackets from tanned hides, a testament to her love for the outdoors and the adventures she shared with her husband, Robert.

Throughout her life, JoAnn exhibited a deep commitment to education and community service. She raised many foster children with kindness and love and tutored elementary students, encouraging them to believe in themselves and further their educational journeys. Her dedication to service was evident in her long-standing membership with the Kelso Lady's Elks, where she held the prestigious role of President, and with the Longview Homemakers Club, significantly impacting the community around her. As a Campfire Girls leader, she took immense pride in guiding young girls to achieve the WoHeLo Medallion, the highest honor bestowed upon them.

JoAnn's zest for life shone brightly in her hobbies and interests. She adored crafting, sewing, and camping with her family and friends, often finding joy in the tranquility of the mountains and beaches. Together with Robert, she traveled to many captivating national parks, creating memories that would last a lifetime. One of her most cherished dreams was to ride a real elephant, a feat she accomplished twice. Her love for elephants extended to her collection, which boasted over a thousand pieces, each a reminder of her playful spirit.

JoAnn's legacy will live on in the hearts of her beloved family, including her daughter Cindy (Duane) Stiebritz, son Tad (Nena) Poirier, granddaughter Niki (Alex) Zuniga, grandsons Allen (Amber) Stiebritz, Chad (Aimee) Poirier, Tad (Brooke) Stiebritz, Jeremy, Tom, Cesar, Paul, Freddy, and several great-grandsons and great-granddaughters.

She is predeceased by her husband Robert, her parents John B. Short and Eunice Short, her brother John B. Short Jr., and her great-grandson Corby.

As we gather to celebrate JoAnn's extraordinary life, we are reminded of her countless contributions to the lives she touched. The Celebration of Life will be held on December 7, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Steele Chapel in Longview, Washington, where family, friends, and community members will share their cherished memories and honor the warmth and spirit that was JoAnn Marie Poirier. Her legacy of love, kindness, and creativity will forever remain an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
