Joseph Charles Myers, affectionately known as Joe, passed away peacefully at his home in Longview on November 23, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife, sons, and their wives. Joe bravely fought a four-year battle with health issues.
Born in Longview, Joe dedicated his life to his family, community, and faith. He retired from Longview Fibre in 2008 after 39 years of service and later worked as a school bus driver for Longview Public Schools for 11 years. Joe also served as a volunteer firefighter for Cowlitz 2 at Bunker Hill for almost five years, starting at the age of 56 until the fire station closed in 2009.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Cheryl Myers (Hoyt), and their sons, Brian (Bobbie) Myers, Ben (Jamie) Myers, and Michael Hansen. He was a proud grandfather to Matthew Fagan (Hilary), Genieva Maiden (Shaun), Bailey Gray (Sabrina), Isaiah Whitman, Travis Myers (Mindee), Alexus Hancock (Tristin), Alijah Whitman, JJ Conley, Ashlee Conley, Andi Myers, and Sierra Myers, and a great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren.
Joe is also survived by his siblings, Violet Snow, Carmen Eastlick, Dan Myers, Margaret Chrisco, Susan Harrison, Bob Myers, and David Myers. He was preceded in death by his brother, Hari Myers (survived by wife Maylynn), and his parents, Oscar and Madeline Myers.
Joe graduated from Mark Morris High School in 1967 and earned an Associate Degree in Industrial Maintenance from Lower Columbia College in 1976. He served his country in Vietnam, rising to the rank of Sergeant E-5 in the 25th Infantry during his time from April 1969 to March 1971.
A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, Joe was a wonderful example of Christ’s love. He volunteered in numerous roles within his home church, Abernathy Assembly of God, and was a life-long musician who led worship, sang at nursing homes, weddings, memorials, and community celebrations. Joe had a gift for connecting with children and loved showing them that it was okay to be silly regardless of age. His quick wit and jovial attitude will be dearly missed.
His family’s favorite memories include his romantic gestures and thoughtfulness towards Cheryl, his dedication to his family, and his willingness to help others. He enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, hunting, singing, woodworking, and cooking. Joe was proud of his military service, his accomplishments as a volunteer fireman, and his children and grandchildren.
Joe's voice was Cheryl’s favorite sound in the world, and together they were a perfect complement, with Cheryl's piano playing harmonizing beautifully with Joe's singing. Joe's legacy of love, faith, and service will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
