Kevin Charles Pointer

November 8, 1942 — February 11, 2023

Kevin C Pointer passed away on February 11, 2023 after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was the only child of Harry and Sally Kelley Pointer; born in Yakima, Washington in 1942. Kevin had attended school in Rainier Oregon and Longview, Washington. He was a 1960 graduate of R A Long High School.

After high school Kevin began work in the sheet metal industry. In those early years he attended apprenticeship training after the work day. And he was a reservist in the Army. In the summer of 1961 Kevin and Caroline Marie Robinson were married. Three sons were added to their young family by 1969. Kevin had his first taste of hunting in high school and became more serious about the sport as the years progressed. The family stayed busy with hiking, camping, berry picking, and fishing too. Spirit Lake, The Goat Rocks, and the mountains around Packwood were favorites.

Kevin became interested in silhouette shooting and made weekend trips around the state, and to Florida and California, to compete. Many of those competitors became life long friends. Being a sheet metal worker Kevin also made the silhouette targets to share with others. He did not take any hobby lightly. The quality and quantity of the gear was important, the scouting was a must, and practice was required.

Over the years Kevin belonged to the Cowlitz Game and Anglers, The Lone Oak Rifle and Pistol Club, The NRA, and The Rocky Mountain Elk Association. He held offices in many of those clubs. Fund raising was of great importance in helping these organizations too. He joined a Relay for Life team and usually was able to fund raise a thousand dollars each year to help fight cancer. Kevin had a good heart and was dedicated to helping others. If there was a problem, he wanted to solve it. He was complimented, often, by the quality of work he did.

After Mount St Helens erupted Kevin traveled to Yakima to participate in a silhouette match. His fellow shooters found a candidate for a blind date for him that weekend. And Susan Jensen Stobie became Susan Pointer the next spring. Longview has been their home together since then. Susan had a young daughter who Kevin helped raise. Their lives were busy even past retirement in 2004 for Kevin and 2005 for Susan.

Even after the Parkinson's limited Kevin's ability to go hunting he watched numerous television shows, read and reread magazines and books about the subject, and shared memories with friends and fellow hunters. He had owned two boats and the crab and salmon catches were unbelievably bountiful. On any drive that passed a river he was at attention to check out the boat launch and any action he could see. He shared his stories of hunts in Idaho, Washington, South Dakota, and Alaska.

Kevin is survived by his wife, Susan, at home. He leaves three sons; Richard (Karen), Brian, and Robert, and one daughter; Shannon (Robert) Weber, eight grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.
