Lawrence Owen Gunder Jr., affectionately known as Larry, was born on February 24, 1938, Elyria, Ohio, and left this world peacefully at his home in Longview, Washington on November 2, 2024. Surrounded by his devoted wife of over 60 years, Dorothy “Val” Gunder, and their daughter Tammy Free, Larry succumbed to the passage of time, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of love, service, and creativity.
Larry had a fulfilling career as a Washington State Licensed and Certified Electrician, showcasing his skills in various esteemed organizations including the renowned Weyerhaeuser, where he forged lasting friendships and contributed meaningfully to the community. His proudest moments included his honorable service in the United States Air Force, where he received the Good Conduct Medal and an Air Force Longevity Service Award, epitomizing dedication and commitment.
Graduating from Elyria High School in 1956 and attending Lower Columbia College, Larry’s educational journey was but a stepping stone to a life rich with experiences and relationships. Known as the life of the room, Larry had a charm that was both infectious and unmistakable; his cheerful voice and distinct laughter filled the air wherever he went. He was never shy to strike up a conversation and made a genuine effort to connect with everyone he met.
Larry was also very proud and enduring of his wife Val. They met in the Air Force, fell in love and never looked back. There are many memories of adventures together driving fast corvettes, the ‘64 impala convertible and mustangs, competitive archery, family hunting seasons and fishing with Val’s dad on the Columbia River, and even smooth dance moves on the roller-skating rink. Larry and Val enjoyed 64 years of loving marriage together.
Larry’s heart and soul flourished in the simple joys of family life. He was heavily involved in the activities of his daughter Tammy and grandsons Jesse, Jammer, and Josh Free, along with his great-grandchildren, Kason, Cooper, Rylee, Karter, and Kenna. His willingness to lend a hand was legendary, as was his knack for creative problem-solving. He cherished his role as a mentor, particularly within the scouting community, where he played an instrumental role in helping all three of his grandsons achieve their Eagle Scout ranks. Larry was a steadfast leader in Tammy’s Campfire program, supporting her in achieving the highest rank of WoHeLo.
A remarkable woodcarver, Larry shaped not only wood but also the hearts of those around him. His passion for woodworking was evident in his active involvement with the Lower Columbia Woodcarver’s Association, where he found immense joy in teaching others the art of carving. He loved to create unique wood carvings, ranging from small animals, to cartoon style characters, and beautiful works of art. He never missed a wood carving event, weekly gathering, or a carving show. He even created a small business, “Maple Mumms,” where he carved beautiful mumm flowers out of wood, and his wife Val and daughter Tammy would help make flower arrangements to give as gifts or sell at local bazaars.
Despite his many accomplishments, what Larry held most dear were the relationships he nurtured over the years. Larry made it a point to participate in every Elyria High School class of 1956 reunion, cherishing the bond he shared with his old friends. He enjoyed monthly breakfasts with fellow retirees from Weyerhaeuser, keeping the spirit of camaraderie alive. Whether sharing stories at a wood carving event or providing advice in the meeting room, Larry’s generous spirit made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Beyond his immediate family, Larry is survived by his sister Jan Schreiber and a multitude of loving relatives including cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. He joins in eternal rest his mother Rose (Raich) Anderson and father Lawrence Owen Gunder Sr., who are surely welcoming him with open arms.
Larry’s life was a testament to the connections we forge and the love we share, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him. A funeral service to celebrate Larry's life will be held at Steele Chapel in Longview, WA on November 21, 2024, inviting all who knew him to honor his memory.
