Monica “Nikki” Overbey went home to be with Jesus on February 2, 2024. She was born on July 8, 1945 in San Francisco, CA and grew up on The Hood Canal in Union, WA. She graduated from Irene S. Reed High School in Shelton in 1963. She lived in San Francisco and New York after graduating, and then moved to Olympia, WA where she lived for 48 years.
Monica worked for CCI Solutions in Olympia for 22 years. She was the company’s first Office Manager, establishing many of the company’s original policies and procedures. She loved working for CCI and held several positions during her tenure there, including Administrative Assistant, Executive Secretary and HR Administrator. She retired in 1999.
Monica married Glen Walter Brincken in 1994.While married to Glen, she served as Coordinator to the Puget Sound Energy Retirees Association, visited the elderly and assisted them with transportation and living needs as part of her church’s nursing home ministry, and served as Board Member for the Ken Lake Homeowners Association. Glen and Monica enjoyed traveling, playing cards with their friends, and hosting large gatherings in their home for friends and family. They were active in their church and led an eventful lifestyle until Glen’s passing on September 23, 2002.
Monica loved photography, good music and dancing, but above all else, Monica loved Jesus. Her love for Jesus reflected how she loved others. She had a deeply compassionate spirit, always quick to assist others whenever she could and happy to bring comfort to those in need. If someone was hurting and needed a kind word or prayer, she would gladly offer it. Even strangers (although the truth is, Monica never met a stranger in her life). Her kindness brought great happiness to those around her. She gave freely of her time and her love, and always made people feel like they were the most important thing in her world.
Monica came out of retirement to become the manager of Friendly Village in Olympia. She prided herself in knowing all the residents (and their pets!) by name. She was not only a manager of the community, but also a friend to so many who lived there. She retired from Friendly Village in 2011.
She married Hershal Eugene Overbey on September 16, 2012. Hershal and Monica enjoyed hosting social gatherings with their friends, and loved working together on their beautiful yard and garden area. They were generous with their time and active in their home community. They loved sitting together on their porch swing enjoying their outdoor living space.
Monica suffered from dementia for several years, and while her suffering was great, she never lost her faith in Jesus. She was bold in her faith and loved to share Jesus with others.
She truly had a smile that would light up a room. A friend once said to her, “You’re full of life and light and you sparkle.” That summed up Monica perfectly.
Monica is preceded in death by her parents Harry and Marion “Micki” Coles, and her brother Harry Coles, IV. She is survived by her husband, Hershal Eugene Overbey of Olympia, her daughter, Natalia (Coles) Dittmer (married to Dave Dittmer) of Woodland, WA, her brother Doug Coles of Grants, NM, her brother Eric Coles of Glen Ellyn, IL and her brother Brad Coles of Honolulu, HI. She leaves behind a legacy of love as seen by the many others who loved her deeply and called her “mom” and “grandma.”
