Raymond L. Johnson, lovingly known as Ray, was born on March 1, 1940, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. As a young boy he moved to Kelso, Washington with his family and lived in that area his entire life. He brought warmth and kindness into the lives of everyone who knew him until his peaceful passing on December 30, 2024, in Longview, Washington. Surrounded by the love of his family at Hospice, he left this world with the same easy-going demeanor that had characterized his life.

Ray lived a full and vibrant life that began with his graduation from Kelso High School in 1959. His devotion to service was evident in his time in the United States Navy active duty and reserves from 1959 to 1963 . While on active duty, he served on the USS Ticonderoga CVA-14 during the WestPac Cruise. Notably, he was a proud member of the "Fix-it" Gang of the R Division, playing a vital role in keeping the "ship afloat". This early military commitment foreshadowed a life dedicated to hard work, exemplified by his 38 years at Reynold's Metals Aluminum Plant, from which he retired in 1999. He took great pride in his accomplishments, particularly his early retirement, which allowed him to indulge in his love for travel with his RV.

Ray was a loving husband of over 65 years to his high school sweetheart Heather D Johnson and a devoted father to Ray (Toni) Johnson Jr. and Lori (Ole) Peterson. His heart overflowed with love for his grandchildren, Marci Johnson, Erin Johnson, and Evan Peterson, and he cherished every moment spent with his great-grandchildren, Isabella Armijo and Jackson Peterson. He is also survived by his beloved siblings: Roger Johnson, Marvin "Butch" Johnson, Ruthann Fuqua, Rose "Elaine" Cordova and Cheri Redgrave. He is also survived by many good friends, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his mother Muriel McGinnis, step-father Don McGinnis, father Lester Johnson, and brothers Ronald "Ronny" Johnson Sr., Robert "Bob" Johnson Sr.

An easy-going and kind spirit, Ray took immense joy in life’s simple pleasures – from owning classic cars and attending car shows with his friends from the Gearlords, to spending time traveling with his wife and friends in their RVs. He was a devoted fan, eagerly watching Seattle Seahawks and UW Husky Football games, sharing his passion for sports with family and friends. He especially loved the RV trip to Arizona in 2015 with his wife, daughter and son-in-law, to support the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX.

Ray has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of love, kindness, and hardworking spirit will continue through his family and all the lives he touched.

A celebration of life is scheduled to honor Ray on January 24, 2025, at Steele Chapel in Longview, Washington, beginning at 1:30 PM. As we gather to remember him, we will celebrate a life well-lived, surrounded by those who love him dearly.
