Raymond Denis Sagar

Raymond Denis Sagar, 81, of Longview, passed away Dec. 21, 2023, in Woodland.

He was born March 16, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Paul Burton and Dorothy Ann (Jones) Sagar. The family moved to Oregon when Ray was 6. He grew up with two sisters, Sally and Claire. He loved spending time with them on their uncle’s ranch on Tenasillahe Island, Ore., where Ray built a small row boat.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, shooting, and sailing. He was a private, law-abiding person who didn’t like crowds.

Ray attended schools in Portland, Ore., before earning his general education diploma while serving in the Army (October 1959 to October 1962). Ray was stationed at Fort Sill, Okla., where he was awarded marksman and sharpshooter badges. After his honorable discharge Ray served in the Army Reserves (October 1962 to October 1965).

Ray provided radio equipment installation and maintenance and was employed by the Oregon Forestry Service before retiring in 2007. He volunteered with the Civil Air Patrol. Ray loved amateur radio and held amateur radio licenses in America (AARL) and England (RSGB).

He moved to the United Kingdom where he me Janet (Hazell) Whalley in 1998. They were married in 2005 and returned to the U.S. in 2010. Janet survives him. Also surviving are his sisters, Sally Stenson of Oregon City, Ore., and Claire Reedy of Tigard, Ore.; Janet’s three daughters, Kay Thomas, Lisa Wright and Claire Mulligan and their families, all in the U.K.; and other extended family members.

Ray was preceded in death by a daughter, Rachel.

A celebration of Ray’s life is planned for 1:30 p.m. Jan. 12 at Steele Chapel. Pastor Jeff Bell will officiate. A reception will follow in the chapel’s hospitality room.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warriors, the AARL, or a charity of choice.
