Roger Timothy Goins

November 22, 1946 — November 12, 2024

Roger Timothy Goins, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2024, in Longview, Washington. He was born on November 22, 1946, in Natchez, Mississippi, to George Edward and Oquilla Goins. Roger's warm spirit and friendly demeanor touched the lives of everyone he met, making an unforgettable presence in the hearts of many.

Roger proudly served in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Vietnam War, aboard the USS Neosho (AO-143). His commitment to service and his country was a testament to his character, one that he carried into his civilian life as a dedicated worker at Reynolds Aluminum in Longview. Roger worked tirelessly to provide for his family, demonstrating a work ethic that was as commendable as his generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need.

A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, Roger found immense joy in his faith and his church family at Living Waters in Castle Rock. His love for others extended beyond his church, as he was known for striking up conversations with strangers and leaving them feeling valued and heard.

Roger had a deep love for adventure, particularly when it came to traveling with his beloved wife, Marie Goins. Together, they explored the Caribbean and traversed the United States, creating myriad memories. One cherished tradition was their yearly trip to Mazatlán, Mexico, where they would capture breathtaking sunsets and delight in the flavors of big fresh prawns. Roger also enjoyed his church family in Mazatlan, Mexico. There he spent countless hours volunteering along side his wife, making sandwiches, and filling water bottles for homeless families.

Among his many hobbies, Roger held a lifelong passion for horses, having served on the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Posse for many years. This role allowed him to contribute meaningfully during significant events, such as providing search and rescue on horseback after the eruption of Mount Saint Helens in 1980. In more recent times, he enjoyed the tranquility of fishing and hunting. He spent his last fishing trip on the serene waters of Silver Lake, casting a line with his daughter, Janette.

Roger is remembered for his humble nature, generosity, and deep love for his family. He treated Marie like a queen, and he was a proud father to his daughters, Janette Verrier and Jennifer Clark, and a doting grandfather to Justin Lawyer, Kelly Lawyer, Felix Verrier, Abigail Clark, and William Clark. The legacy of love and kindness he imparted will be carried forward by his extensive friends and family.

Roger was preceded in death by his father George Edward Goins, mother Oquilla Goins, brother George Forrest Goins, and sisters Vera Anita Stewart and Oquilla Jerrell Elliott, along with his daughter Suzanne Marie Goins and son-in-law Matthew Louis Clark and nephew George Heath Goins.

A memorial service to honor Roger's extraordinary life will take place on November 25, 2024, at Steele Chapel in Longview, WA, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM. For those who wish to pay last respects, viewing will be available beginning at 10 AM. In this gathering of love, laughter, and remembrance, friends and family will join together to celebrate the remarkable journey of a man whose heart was as vast as the horizons he traveled. Roger Timothy Goins will forever be loved, remembered, and missed by those fortunate enough to have known him.
