Vernon Miles Kennedy, affectionately known as “Santa,” passed away peacefully from natural causes on August 15, 2024, at The Oaks at Timberline in Vancouver, Washington. Born on December 6, 1932, in Longview, Washington, Vernon led a life defined by love, laughter, and an unwavering commitment to his family.
A proud graduate of R.A. Long High School in 1952, Vernon went on to build a successful career, initially working at Weyerhaeuser before taking the reins at Kennedy Roofing, a venture that allowed him to provide for his family with pride. However, it was not just his professional achievements that defined him; it was the warmth he brought into the lives of those around him.
Vernon's personality shone brightly, characterized by his loving nature. He was deeply devoted to his family, which includes his cherished children, Deborah Brost (Phil), Kelly Kennedy (Shelly), Shannon Greenwood and his loving parents, Merritt and Lyda May Kennedy. He is also survived by his twin sister, Virginia, brothers Ken and Dick Kennedy, and many more extended family members who will miss his gentle spirit and tender heart.
One of Vernon’s proudest accomplishments was the 20 years he spent embodying the spirit of Saint Nicholas, donning a red velvet suit with fluffy white trim made especially for him by Elsie. This joyous role allowed him to spread happiness and cheer not only to countless children but also to seniors, as he sang at several nursing homes, bringing smiles wherever he went.
Though his beloved son, Marvin Kennedy, and grandson, Jay Kennedy, son-in-law Scott Greenwood, and sibling Audrey, Dorthy, Gene, Don, Ron are no longer with us, Vernon’s legacy of love and kindness will continue to resonate through the lives he touched. He leaves behind a tapestry of memories threaded with laughter, warmth, and the indelible joy of living.
As Vernon embarks on this next journey, may we carry forward the lessons he imparted through his life: the importance of family, the beauty of kindness, and the magic of making others smile. Here's to Vernon, our beloved Santa, who has left us with an everlasting light in our hearts.
